AFWL 2019 has been an event like no other, the commercial partnership with EPG Media brought about a number of progressive modifications to the existing platform and based on the overwhelming feedback has been an unprecedented success, marking a monumental milestone for African fashion globally.
AFWL took place over two days starting on Friday 9th August opening its doors to a grand ceremony of African splendour with rhythmic dancers, drums and colourful, ethical designs, worn to welcome the queues of excited fashion lovers.
The exuberant atmosphere was enhanced by this year’s addition of the Bluxe Luxury Boutique by EPG Media, and brought forth Afrocentric luxury designers from the UK, South Africa, Seychelles and West Africa including The Perfumer’s Story by Azzi Glasser, Vanessa Gounden, Ile Moremi, ESA (Enterprise Seychelles Agency) and more.
Princess Ronke Ademiluyi founder of AFWL added to the prolific panel of speakers in the Bluxe Business Forum, created and hosted by EPG Media’s founder Joseph Farodoye, which included Simone Cipriani of the Ethical Fashion Initiative, Her Excellency Queen Diambi of DRC Congo, Deputy Mayor of Social Integration and Community Engagement Debbie Weekes-Bernard of the London Mayors Office, V&A Museum, Azzi Glasser, Vanessa Gounden, First Lady of Ekiti State Her Excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi and First Lady of Kwara State Her Excellency Olufolake Abdulrazaq and more. Guests of the Bluxe Business Forum added ‘its a refreshing, much needed addition’ to the already successful AFWL platform.
The AFWL raised catwalk set a new tone as designers raised the bar showcasing collections across five catwalk shows. The first show on Friday had designers stealing the limelight including TIKZN Collective with more than 10 designers from South Africa including Laaste by EDI, House of Tommie and Urban Zulu. Friday afternoon’s show included brands such as Ife Clothing by Kunle Afolayan, Sherah, Thabied, which had fashionistas in a frenzy as they snapped to capture next seasons look.
AFWL 2019’s catwalk shows were fully sold out and the finale which took place on Saturday evening, concluded in a celebrity catwalk powered by Bluxe and live performances by several artistes including AFWL 2019 Ambassador Shingai wearing featured designer Vanessa Gounden, whose collection had the audience and press in awe, showcasing natural handcrafted fabrics and ethically engineered designs to a standing ovation.
Other celebrities on the catwalk included funny man Eddie Kadi, Dr Kelechi Anyikeudi, Brenda Edwards, Yetunde Oduwole, Sandy Bogle of Gogglebox and Smade founder of AfroNation. The front row was overrun with VIP’s including Nigerian High Commissioner, His Excellency George Adesola Oguntade, CFR, CON, Caryn Franklin of the BBC’s Clothes Show, Man City Under 18’s striker Dodi Rasmussen El Circy, BBC1 Judge on All Together Now’s Alfredo Carreira and much more.
AFWL 2019 is now concluded, but 2020 marks the 10-year anniversary of Africa Fashion Week London and promises to be an unparalleled exotic African extravaganza fashion week.
